Clervaux Through the Centuries: From Medieval Stronghold to Cultural Landmark

Clervaux’s history is closely linked to its imposing castle, whose origins reach back to the Middle Ages. Built on a rocky spur overlooking the valley, the castle developed over several centuries and became the defining landmark of the town.

Clervaux experienced one of the most dramatic chapters of its history during the Second World War. In December 1944, the town became a battlefield during the German Ardennes Offensive, better known as the Battle of the Bulge. Clervaux Castle and parts of the town suffered severe damage during the fighting. The castle was later restored and today stands as both a reminder of this turbulent period and a centre of cultural heritage.

The 20th century also gave Clervaux an international cultural dimension. The restored castle became the permanent home of Edward Steichen’s celebrated photographic exhibition The Family of Man, which was inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2003.

Today, Clervaux brings these different layers of its past together — medieval heritage, memories of wartime Luxembourg, religious traditions and internationally recognised culture — giving the commune a distinctive place in the history of northern Luxembourg.
