The history of Esch-sur-Alzette stretches back thousands of years, with archaeological evidence showing human presence in the area long before the town was established. The name "Asch" first appeared in historical records in 1128, and in 1328, John the Blind, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia, granted Esch the status of a Free City, an important milestone in its development.

For centuries, Esch remained a modest settlement shaped by agriculture and regional trade. Like many towns in the region, it experienced periods of conflict, destruction and reconstruction. In 1841, Esch became the administrative centre of the newly created Canton of Esch-sur-Alzette, laying the foundation for its future growth.

The city's transformation began in the mid-19th century with the discovery of iron ore in southern Luxembourg. The rapid development of mining and the steel industry turned Esch-sur-Alzette into the country's industrial powerhouse, earning it the nickname "Metropolis of Iron."
